Readers who follow me on Twitter, on Facebook or in real life know that I’m a very big fan of Kanye West’s music. I’ve never kept it a secret that I think the man is a musical genius, which is especially true since the release of his greatest work to date–My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.
This is to say that when I first heard Kanye’s new song ‘Theraflu,’ now renamed ‘Way Too Cold,’ I was thrilled. Then, a video was released for the song sometime last week, and I haven’t stopped listening since.
The beat is straight from the ‘N*ggas in Paris’-Kanye-West school of production, and he’s showing that he’s still running circles around everybody else. The beat is simple, but not simplistic, and different layers emphasize different things at different moments of the 3:43 of the song.
This is the unofficial video for the song–in the sense that it’s not one that Kanye made himself. Ashley Smith, who goes by @Ash_Innovator, whoever he is, produced the video but he fooled me and probably a few others as well. Because it looks like one of Kanye’s creation as much as anything I could have imagined. I totally see this as a plausible creation of Kanye if the rapper, producer and part-time assh*le simply didn’t have as much money as he does now.
In the video, a young kid, who goes by Caleb Harper and looks to be about 7 years old, acts as Kanye, rapping to the beat and walking on 5th Avenue Manhattan. The lyrics being what they are, this means the young one swears a lot because Kanye swears a lot in the song. But he’s cute, funny, has more swag than I do, and I think it works very well. Some probably take offense with this choice of a young child spewing such vile lyrics, and they are probably the same people who took offense with Eminem’s lyrics when he first started rapping as Slim Shady.
Such discourse, or lyrics, or behaviour, etc., shouldn’t be tolerated or glorified for our children, or something to that extent.
M’eh. Our children have parents of their own and their education depends much more on them than on a rap song or two. Relying on the likes of the Rick Rosses, the Kanye Wests, and the Eminems of rap music is a great way to rid yourself of the responsibility of raising a child of your own, but probably not an efficient or smart one. But that’s another debate.
With this video, @Ash_Innovator created an indictment on today’s precocious society, where even 7-year-olds want bad chicks with no flaws and wonder why they can’t get real money anymore. (It could also be that he just wanted a real, real cool video. Mission accomplished either way.) That said, if you must be against the choice of the 7-year-old for the video, you must acknowledge that the video does teach other valuable lessons too. For one thing, the young one pretty clearly gets the girl, and there’s something to be said for that.
My guess is that this will be the only video Kanye fans will see for ‘Way Too Cold’–because ultimately, this video just might be good enough for Kanye himself.
